Refinishing Hardwood Floors
If old hardwood floors are like
fine furniture, shouldn't they be refinished the same way?
A hardwood floor should only be
sanded as part of a new installation. The main reason is that
sanding will destroy most of the character that a good old
floor has spent decades developing. The sanding process also
removes some of the wood, making the floor thinner - sand a
wood floor enough times, and you will have to replace it.
Sanding a floor also creates a lot of dust. That dust is not
only unpleasant, it will also interfere with applying a smooth
new finish, unless you are able to get rid of enough of it.
Add to all this that floor sanding machines are very tricky to
use well, especially the edger. Even if you can handle both
the drum sander and the edger like a pro, finishing the edge
will still require literally scraping some wood away.
